Story and lore-driven DayZ Roleplay Server with imaginative low-fantasy and sci-fi elements, created and developed by roleplay veterans.
The sphere of roleplay is niche, but filled with passionate individuals who are typically not content with the coastal massacres and violently brief encounters that comprise the vanilla DayZ experience. The Veil was created by a group of friends who all share a passion for storytelling, and collectively have tens of thousands of hours spent immersing themselves across different mediums. Our aim with The Veil is to enable you to tell the stories you want to tell, engage with others' stories, and experience a world rich in lore and atmosphere. We'll set the stage, but we welcome all of the actors and the parts they have yet to play.
Lore
When the rifts began to open, the smell of death permeated the air and fear took on a face that could not be ignored. In my quest for a safe haven, I happened upon an island that held the promise of prosperity. A community had begun to build and create a place for themselves to beat and survive the incoming infestation. I only hope that I can lend my skills and help to build what they have started. I have my reasons for settling here, but why have you come to The Veil?
What To Expect
Game Mechanics
Custom coded AI created by our experienced team of programmers (These are not the same old monsters) For example the Infected vary in strength, speed and aggression depending on many different factors including location, time of day and other surprising elements
Unique sci-fi/low fantasy game elements to explore and engage with, with more being introduced through regular updates
The beautiful Deer Isle map (set in Deer Isle, Maine), with exciting custom created additions to help traverse the expanse of sea and islands such as craftable Rafts and findable Viking Ships and even magical teleportation!
Balanced and custom loot spawns, forget everything you know about where things spawn. (We want the whole world to have meaning)
Immersive Lore
The Veil is a living and breathing world, every action (or inaction) by players affects the overall lore as well as the game environment
A dedicated and veteran Lore Team that encourages collaboration between the team and the players
PDA system in game (that displays the Global PDA channel in the Discord server) and a special text channel that allows players to "talk" on the in game radio (Allowing for time zone differences and continuous character exploration even when RL doesn't allow for game play)
Stories, journal entries and more! Help build on the lore of your own character by writing stories, character journals, screenshots and art

Custom created gear and items by our generous and talented artists (Including custom items that are crafted in game)
Mining and metallurgy, ammunition crafting, herbalism and alchemy and much more to discover!
OOC Assurances
We have a dedicated and experienced team of veteran roleplayers that make up our staff and community. Staff are available to help at nearly all hours with any issues that may arise (IC, technical issues, lore questions, community issues, etc.) through our ticket system. And the community is friendly and helpful both in game and in the Discord server.
Here on The Veil it is 100% roleplay all the time. No KoS/RDM (except for specially marked zones which offer more rewards for more risk).
We strive in everything that we do to put our players first by creating a safe and welcoming environment that encourages creativity without fear of toxicity or judgement
Have a suggestion? We want to hear from you! We have a feedback-and-suggestions channel where you can feel free to suggest anything from new modpacks to rules changes.
Rules
Always be respectful and have the community’s interest in mind. We all are here to have fun and tell interesting, amazing stories!
Always Record: Medal/ShadowPlay/ReLive. (See links at bottom of rules)
All roleplay must also comply with Twitch Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. ERP is not allowed.
No discriminatory/hateful/abusive speech of any kind is acceptable in-game or on our Discord.
We expect all members to behave in a mature manner and assume that by owning DayZ you meet its ESRB rating which is “Mature 17+”.
All characters must be 18 or older.
KoS (Killing on Sight) is not allowed on this server. You must roleplay with other players before taking hostile actions against them, including any action that puts another player in the downed state. The only exception to this rule is when all involved players are within a designated KoS Zone.
Stay In Character
When interacting with other people on the server, it is important to stay in character (IC) at all times. We strongly encourage everyone to fully immerse themselves in their characters and behave as though they are living in this world. Saying out-of-character (OOC) statements, such as "I'm lagging" or "my mic is playing up," detracts from the intensity and legitimacy of the interaction. If you absolutely must state something OOC to continue with roleplay, please use the in-game text chat and preface your text with double forward slashes " // ".
VoIP / In-game Voice
When in a roleplay situation or hostile situations you mustmute any third-party communication (ex: Discord) and must only communicate with other players using the in-game VoIP, radio, or written notes. Outside of roleplay situations (ex: when no one is within earshot of your in-game voice), you may use third-party communication or the #radio-transmissions channel only as long as you have a working radio with a battery on your person. If you are found to be using third-party communications during roleplay interactions, you may be subject to punishment.
We do not allow any characters that are “mute” or cannot speak.
Soundboards
Soundboards or playing music can be a complicated thing to RP being it can confuse players and potentially break immersion. If you wish to use such please open a support ticket to get it approved by Staff.
Radio Transmission Channel
Do not initiate Hostile RP on anyone over the #radio-transmissions channel and have it transferred into the in-game environment. For example, typing in #radio-transmissions, "John Doe, if you don't stop and drop your weapon I will shoot you" and then shooting John Doe in-game when he does not comply is not allowed.
Do not share non-vanilla recipes over the #radio-transmissions channel or in Discord. This information should be shared in-character and used as a reason for interaction.
If you need assistance setting up third-party software to incorporate in-game voice and third-party clients please feel free to open a ticket and we will be more than willing to help.
Players who are downed may not use the radio-transmissions channel on our Discord as their character is completely unconscious and indisposed, and thus not able to use any forms of communication.
Voice Changers
Voice changers are not allowed. You can open a Lore Ticket to ask for approval to use a voice changer. It is expected to be as “real” sounding as possible and make sense of why your character would be able to have a different-sounding voice.
”Can I change my voice temporarily by putting on a fake accent or something similar?”
While this is allowed it needs to make sense and provide more RP for everyone. If it is simply to “hide” your character from being caught doing something then it is most likely not the best choice and will be reviewed by staff.
Third-Party Voice Communications
Any recordings submitted as evidence for tickets must include all recordings of third-party voice clients and in-game voice. In cases where voice communication would clearly be required for activities in-game and said recordings are absent, staff will operate under the assumption that communication occurred via third-party clients contrary to our rules and will be handled as such.
Metagaming
Using OOC knowledge IC is not allowed. Everything that your character says, does, or knows in-game must come from in-character and in-game knowledge.
Any form of voice chat or communication that is NOT in-game is to be considered OOC and will be considered metagaming if used.
Anything posted in Discord or other forms of text chat is considered OOC with the exception of #radio-transmissions and #global-pda-chat channels.
Anything recorded (using Medal, Nvidia ShadowPlay, or other forms of video recording) is considered OOC and cannot be used for in-character purposes. (Example: “Body Cam Footage”)
Players who make any decisions that are driven or informed by the fact that there is now a "downed" state that prevents instant death will be dealt with, as will any player who abuses the mechanic.
Value Your Life
You must behave in character at all times and with the utmost concern for your life. You may not attempt to shoot your way out of a situation in which a reasonable person would not expect to succeed. This means that if you are outnumbered or have a significant risk of being killed in a given interaction (for example, being a “sacrifice”), you must seriously consider your character’s ability to resolve a conflict with and without violence. If you are killed and did not Value Your Life, you may be subject to a Character Kill.
You must also value life. This means you should not kill or down someone just because they are not immediately complying, unless it is in defense of your own or an ally's life.
Suicide roleplay
Suicide roleplay is not allowed, as it challenges the rule of Valuing Your Life and has the potential to cause undue distress to other players. If your character commits suicide (F11) within sight of any other player, your character will be treated as Character Killed, and you will receive a warning.
You may only suicide your character for the purpose of obtaining a better spawn after a death, as long as no other players are able to see you, and you do not suicide your character more than three times. You may not suicide for that purpose if more than three minutes have passed since spawning.
New Life Rule
When a player is killed by another and not revived, they may not remember the events or interactions which led to their death.
If you are revived by another player after being downed, then you are allowed to retain knowledge of the events or interactions leading up to your incapacitation.
If you instead respawn, then you may not remember.
In either case, you must roleplay your character as recovering from their injuries.
In the case of a respawn, players may not return to the area in which those events occurred until at least an hour after the resolution of hostilities. If the location in which your death occurred is your base or home, you must still wait.
Players who have been revived may not re-engage in ongoing hostilities if those events led to their incapacitation.
If your death is sudden (being shot in a KoS zone, falling to your death, etc.), telling someone else the location of your body is considered Metagaming and will be dealt with accordingly.
Only Player vs Environment deaths are excepted from waiting an hour after death (such as dying to wildlife or falling to your death).
Character Death/Kill “CK”
Other players with a legitimate reason to permanently kill your character may submit a support ticket to allow them to permanently kill your character upon capturing them. This will require significant evidence and a significant amount of roleplay.
If you are found to have not valued your life during an interaction in which you were downed and/or killed, your character may be subject to a Character Kill.
Any players who are killed in the above manners will be required to create a new character with a different personality and no existing relationships with any characters or factions on the server.
If you are CK’d you may not go back to your base. Your new character will not know the codes to the base or its location. There are no exceptions for “relatives” or notes left behind by your now-deceased character.
Realism
Your character must behave in a manner that is consistent with their background and goals, and that is also in line with the lore of the server. It is important to maintain realism. For example, a carpenter cannot become an assassin, nor can a priest with a strong moral compass rob indiscriminately. You may not name your character after any famous or fictional person, nor should you adopt their persona unless explicitly approved by Staff.
All players must avoid any behavior that breaks immersion or is unrealistic. This includes but is not limited to crawling through barred windows or "fidgeting" when talking to people (strafing side to side, etc.).
After a hostile interaction, you must wait at least 10 minutes before logging out. You may not log out to avoid ANY interaction.
To enter the "downed" state means you took a nearly fatal wound. If you are revived from being downed by damage caused by another player after hostile initiation, you must roleplay recovery from the wound. This means that you are not to immediately pop back onto your feet and sprint around.
In regards to PvE interactions that lead to being in a downed state, you should still roleplay recovery from/treatment of your wounds with the medical professional who revives you.
Low-Fantasy and Beyond
All stories and scenarios that involve any sort of low-fantasy aspects that are “new” or are not already established as lore must be brought to and approved by the Lore Team in a Lore Ticket. This is to ensure that all stories fit within the lore of the server and are as realistic in nature as possible in our lore’s setting.
Players are expected to conduct themselves realistically according to their background and goals, and should not engage in any behavior that is unrealistic or breaks immersion. If you have any questions regarding the approval process or need assistance developing a story or scenario that fits within the lore of the server, please reach out to the staff for guidance.
Harassment/Targeting
Repeatedly attacking or robbing an individual, group, or faction is unacceptable without realistic in-character reasoning. Even then, it should be limited. Conflict is normal and expected in DayZ, but at the end of the day, everyone should be having a fun roleplay experience.
Hostile Roleplay
Initiation
Initiation means that a situation has turned hostile. Initiation occurs when one party makes verbal demands with a clear verbal or physical threat of an action, directed towards another party.
You must have prior interaction or conversation with the victim(s). "Hands up or die" is not acceptable. Your demands must be reasonable and clearly stated.
If the victim(s) does not comply with demands within 10 seconds, they are subject to the use of force.
Killing or downing someone should always be the last resort as it can ruin potential RP situations or outcomes. Resorting to downing or killing someone should only ever be if your life is in danger (ex: The other person has a gun and can kill you).
As soon as a party has been initiated upon, they may choose to fight back as long as they are not significantly outnumbered and are Valuing Their Lives.
Putting any player into the downed state without proper initiation is considered KoS.
Vehicle Initiation and Hostile RP
For Hostile RP involving vehicles please see the “Vehicles → Vehicle Initiation and Hostile RP” section below
Size Limits & Identification
Groups traveling with any hostile intentions (e.g., “going out to rob”, or “going out to attack a certain group”) may be no larger than 8 players unless they have received staff approval.
Groups must be wearing identical armbands in order to assist in hostile interactions. This is to reduce confusion and prevent KoS from occurring.
Armbands may not be removed after initiation occurs until at least 10 minutes have passed since the last hostile action.
Patches on your helmet, arm, or backpack DO NOT count as armbands.
Hostage/Victim Expectations
When holding someone hostage or robbing someone, you must leave them with the essentials to survive:
- a knife and water source (if they had one)
- one piece of food
- one bandage
- shirt
- pants
- shoes
Failing to leave someone with any of these items will not invalidate the robbery but will act as a strike against the person/people doing the robbery.
As long as your victim is complying with reasonable demands that do not endanger their safety, you must ensure they do not die or become downed as a result of your action or inaction.
You may keep victims for 30 minutes without consent, or longer with consent (you may ask the victim using in-game text chat in an OOC context). After this period, unless negotiations are ongoing to ensure their return you must release your victim(s).
You MUST get consent from your victim to do any sort of permanent damage(s), and you must get consent from your victim if you intend to put them in the downed state and revive them as a part of extended hostile roleplay.
Forcing someone to “not talk” does not count as proper initiation and does not grant you the right to kill them. This does nothing but prevent RP. The only loose exception can be if the victim is being “toxic” which staff will determine whether or not it is justifiable as toxic.
Demanding someone to do something that is belittling or degrading such as “kneel and kiss my boots” can be done but is not something that will grant you KOS rights.
“Griefing” or “damaging/destroying someone’s gear or base” is not allowed in way or in any scenario.
If you are revived from being downed by damage caused by another player after hostile initiation, you must roleplay recovery from the wound. This means that you are not to immediately pop back onto your feet and start running around.
KoS Zones
A KoS Zone is an area on the map where players do not need to speak, initiate, roleplay, or otherwise make themselves known to other players before shooting or killing them. However, you must still remain in character and Value Your Life while inside the Zones (e.g., no suicide bombing or yelling about your K/D ratio).
You may not shoot at anyone outside of a KoS Zone while you are inside, and vice-versa. The exception to this is if you are engaged within a KoS Zone and attempt to flee, your attacker(s) who was inside the Zone may continue to attempt to kill you for no more than 5 minutes after you have left the Zone.
KoS Zones are indicated by fences around the military areas. Additionally, a map is provided in Discord with a clear delineation of the Zones. There is no notification when you enter or exit a KoS Zone.
Group/Faction Definitions, Benefits, Restrictions
Settlements
A Settlement is defined as an area, town, or city on the map that has been established by players. Settlements must remain unlocked and accessible at all times unless they are being attacked (the Settlement has been initiated on). A Settlement cannot remain locked for longer than 12 hours. If a Settlement is locked there must be someone available at the gate to answer to any inquiries or possible RP interactions. If a Settlement is locked the attackers do have the opportunity to open a ticket and get approval from staff to cut the lock on the front gate.
Factions
A faction is defined as a group of 5 or more players.
Group
A group is 2 to 4 players.
Solo
A solo is 1 player.
Flags and Armbands
Factions and Settlements may submit a ticket to staff to request a custom flag, armband, and 1 placed vanilla/deer isle building as long as they provide the building materials for the type of building being requested. (Ex. a concrete building would require something like pipes, nails, and stone).
*Factions or Settlements may only request a batch of 10 armbands and 1 flag per every 2 weeks and can only be requested and given to the leader of the faction or if permitted by the leader.
If you are interested in developing a settlement, please contact staff for information.
Faction Agreement
If a faction has individual members committing infractions repeatedly, then that faction will be issued a "Faction Oversight":
The faction's leaders will be responsible for ensuring that their faction members adhere to our rules. If the faction's leaders are unable to control their members and infractions continue unabated, then punishments will be issued to the faction as a whole.
Tips
When giving someone a place to live we recommend the owner or people who run the Settlement set code locks for residents.
Q: “How long should we give a resident before we remove their code lock to make room for someone new?”
A: We usually say around 14 days of them being inactive. This is the same amount of time that it takes for a flag to drop and the items to begin despawning.
Base Building
Solo players and groups (non-factions) are allowed 1 base. Factions are allowed 1 base and 1 outpost. All bases must be built realistically (no floating bases, no overhanging platforms without support, etc.), and should be secured with at least 1 code lock and a flag.
You are allowed no more than 10 code locks per base or outpost. Additionally, your base or outpost must fit within the radius of 1 flag.
Each person in a Settlement is allowed no more than 2 code locks for their personal storage. This does not include doors to secure their room.
You may not build additional flags to extend the size of your base or outpost.
You may not block off any water pumps that are marked on the map unless explicitly approved by staff.
You may not build in KOS zones.
You may not build on any Oil Rigs.
You may not build within 800m of the center of the Crater (the tower)
You may not build in or around the fences of the KMUC Bunker
You may not build in or block off Medical Buildings or Hospitals without approval from Staff
You may not block main roads with anything that is locked with a codelock
You may not build in major points of interest (Crater, inside Devil’s Eye, KMUC bunker, or the Arctic Temple). Please open a ticket if you are unsure. This includes any storage items or non-functional items (A functional item example is a fireplace to cook)
Fences, walls, and doors cannot be stacked higher than 3 as this is in breach of the “realistic building rule”.
Watchtowers cannot be more than 2 high (one on top of another) as this is in breach of the “realistic building rule”.
Base Inactivity
If you should be inactive for a time period of 45 consecutive days, an investigation will be made by staff to determine if your base should be deleted. Logging in to only raise your flag and then logging out will not count as "being active" and will be taken into consideration.
Inactive is to be defined as playing the game for less than an average of 2 hours a week for 45 days.
Making this change will help improve the performance of the server for your enjoyment as well as free up potential base locations for new RPers.
Please feel free to open a ticket if you have any questions or concerns.
Base Raids
If you find anyone inside of your base who was not invited by you or a member of your group or faction, you may shoot them on sight without initiation. They may not return fire unless shot at by the inhabitants.
Boosting
In general, “boosting” is not allowed. You may not place or move any item or vehicle to use to boost or gain access into a base or get out of a base you got into. This even applies to bases that have their flag all of the way down.
The only exception is you may use only one other person to boost yourself over an obstacle during a base raid. Again. you may not build, place items, or use anything else (ex: Vehicles) to boost or assist in boosting into or out of a base.
Dismantling
You may not dismantle or pack anyitem that is covered/protected by a flag.
A white flag icon will appear to the left of the item’s name when looking at the item.
Soft Raids
If a base is accessible by climbing through open and unbarred windows, vaulting walls, or jumping from static buildings, then players may soft raid it. They may take any items from storage they can access.
You may not convert a fence to a gate or an unhinged door to a door to gain access.
“Insiding” is a form of a “soft raid” and the same rules will apply to it.
All soft raids must be recorded, as staff may ask for evidence that players were able to get in and out realistically and non-destructively. You must be able to leave the base legally (no dismantling walls or doors or illegal boosting) that you entered. You may not make multiple trips in and out of a base while soft raiding. You must wait 48 hours before you may soft raid that base again.
There is no sawing of code locks allowed except in the case of Hard Raids.
Removing Flags
Being that the removal of flags can cause a person’s base to despawn, it is mandatory that if you do remove a flag you must replace it with another. You are NOT allowed to lower a flag to make someone’s base despawn.
Hard Raids
During a hard raid, you may break down walls and doors to gain access to someone’s base. These raids must be approved by staff (by opening a support ticket) and have a valid roleplay reason (wanting to steal their things is not valid).
While executing a hard raid, you must announce to the inhabitants that you will be attempting to force your way in. From this moment, they may begin using force to defend themselves, and you/your group may likewise use force if fired upon.
However, if the inhabitants surrender, you must not kill them except in the case of a Character Kill which has been approved in a support ticket by Staff.
If successful, the raiding party may only take what they can carry on their persons. They may not return to retrieve more items, nor may they call in support to carry more items after the raid has ended.
Any players killed during a hard raid may not return to the raid until it is over and an hour has passed.
You may not perform hard raids solo except in the case of a solo player raiding another solo player.
After a base has been raided, the inhabitants will be given a 7-day grace period during which players may not hard raid them again.
Vehicles
Due to the laggy and buggy nature of DayZ, especially when it comes to vehicles, all vehicles are "drive at your own risk". This means there will be no compensation or staff intervention if a vehicle decides to "take flight" or crash. It is up to the player to drive with extreme caution.
Wheeled Vehicles
1 “large” vehicle and 1 quad per solo
1 “large” vehicle and 1 quad per group
2 seats per faction member (ex: a faction with 8 members could have 4 cars that seat 4)
Players are not allowed to base within 100 meters of “garages”/mechanic workbenches
Players are not allowed to camp the “garages”/mechanic workbenches to rob others
Boats
Boats like other vehicles are “drive at your own risk”
There is currently no way to lock your boat so you will need to secure it.
Crafting Stations
You cannot build a base within 200m of the crafting stations
You cannot camp the crafting stations
Vehicle Initiation and Hostile RP
Vehicles in DayZ can be very laggy and prone to desync, among other issues. Therefore, all hostile roleplay associated with vehicles must be approached with caution, common sense, and the awareness that the driver may not be able to hear you due to these issues.
You may not initiate hostile RP on a fast-moving vehicle as there is no way to be certain the driver can hear you.
If the vehicle is moving at a slow rate or was at a stop and began to accelerate when any hostile initiation happened it would may be valid based on the situation. Video evidence can be provided in a ticket for review and the outcome will be at Staff’s discretion.
You may not purposely steer your vehicle towards or run over pedestrians.
It is up to pedestrians to be out of the way of a vehicle. A person outside of a vehicle will have a better chance of knowing the vehicle is there than the opposite due to network lag and all of that.
“Roadblocks” or placing/positioning objects in the road to stop a vehicle are not allowed as they will more than likely kill the passengers of a vehicle when they crash into them and it would be without proper hostile RP initiation.
Ruleplay/Loopholes/Powergaming/Abusing Game Mechanics/GearRP/FailRP
Anyone detracting from others’ gameplay or roleplay experience through the use of ruleplay, loopholes, abusing game mechanics to gain an advantage (such as loot cycling), or powergaming will be subject to punishment. If you are unsure about what any of this means, please submit a ticket to staff.
You are not allowed to force anyone to send a PDA message to confirm their identity.
Multiple Characters
You can only be one character at a time unless it has been explicitly approved by Staff and the Lore Team. The reason for this is that it can be confusing for others and has the potential for causing accidental metagaming and or powergaming.
Cheating/Exploiting
There is no tolerance for players who use cheats, hacks, or exploits on The Veil. Anyone doing so will be immediately and permanently banned.
OOC Toxicity
Sharing information or screenshots from other private Discords (or other such communities) that are nefarious in any way is against the spirit of what we aim to cultivate in our community. Such actions are extremely toxic and detrimental to both the community and to roleplay. If we see that anyone is engaging in this behavior, they will be removed from the Veil community.
If you encounter someone breaking this rule, we request that you ask them to stop and remind them of how harmful it is. If they do not stop, please inform the Staff. This policy is in place for the health and betterment of the entire community.
Punishments
Punishments will be at the discretion of the staff member(s) handling the situation.
Support Tickets
All tickets to staff must include VIDEO evidence of the incident. We strongly encourage all players to record all hostile interactions, and it is a requirement to record for soft raids. Rule breaks will only be addressed through tickets and may not be discussed in public Discord channels.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
In order to assist players navigating the world in which The Veil takes place, we have put together a few answers to some Frequently Asked Questions. Not all of this information is in-character knowledge, but is meant to guide your understanding of the server's lore, the Rift Events, Deer Isle, and the state of Earth on the server.
How long have the Rift Events been a part of the world?
Since 2010. Our current setting is early 2020, and for nearly the entirety of the 8 years since the first Rift Event in Deer Isle, there have been Rift Events worldwide. These Rift Events outside of Deer Isle are still on-going.
So is the entire world in the same state as Deer Isle?
Pretty much. There are no more governments or militaries, and for the most part there are no functioning vehicles or organizations. Most attempts at rebuilding any sort of civilization or societies have failed, though surely some small pockets of survivors have had minor successes. Communications over long-range distances are effectively neutered, many satellites have already de-orbited. The world is a lawless and vicious place. Brutality, banditry, and barbarism are quite rampant.
What caused the first Rift Event, or what causes the Rift Events in general?
This is something to be discovered in-character.
Zombies?
While DayZ is a zombie game, in The Veil they should not be thought of as archetypical "zombies", "undead", or any variation that treats them as unliving. They are infected individuals who began acting erratically and violently after the Rift Events spread across the world. Consequently, these infected individuals permeate the globe and have for eight years.
All characters will have this knowledge.
So why do they look like zombies?
It takes a tremendous amount of effort and artistic talent to re-skin every zombie model and make it unique, which is not something we are keen to do. In the meantime, suspension of disbelief is a powerful tool.
Not really. Any experiences on other servers or maps may not be referenced in-character here, unless adapted to fit our lore.
What would my character know about the Rift Events?
Unless you have been on Deer Isle since the first Rift Event, not much other than they are violent and dangerous events. The exact cause of the Rift Events are unknown to all but a select few actors. However, all characters with access to uncensored news media circa 2010 would know that the first Rift Event occurred in Deer Isle, and signaled the apocalypse.
Alchemy? Magic?
A character who was not present on Deer Isle between 2010 and the current date will have no understanding or knowledge of these concepts.
Characters who were present might have heard of these concepts, but specifics will be foreign and unknown.
"Magic" is a simplification of what is occurring in the world of The Veil, but it is very much the simplest way to express that there is some magical shit.
My special forces group/PMC…?
Your special forces group, military organization, or private military company has been without a command structure for at least seven years. The logistical challenge of supporting and maintaining military organizations of any caliber has been insurmountable. Your group or comrades may still be alive, but have most likely been without logistical or command support for a very long time.
"I was sent here by…"
This is a question to approach the Lore team about. We will do our best to incorporate any small organizations into the world's lore, but the legwork must be done by you to ensure it fits within the world of The Veil. We aim to be as flexible as possible, with some obvious exceptions and caveats.
So… how do I become a(n) Alchemist/Smith/Wizard, etc.?
To address this as bluntly as possible, this is a low fantasy setting. This means that anything considered "magical" is an intrusion upon the world and should not be viewed as an expected behavior.. The fact that magic exists in any fashion within the world should be a strong shock to most characters who have not been present on Deer Isle since 2010.
As to learning to become a craftsman of some sort, please consider your character's ability to perform and learn any such skills. A character should not be able to do everything. Well-developed and thought-out characters will have flaws as well as strengths. Your character not knowing how to do something will allow more opportunities for interactions with other characters who do have the knowledge.
I need to tell another player that I have to contact the admins for some reason. How should I do this?
Avoid it if you can, unless it is absolutely necessary. Even if another player is breaking the rules, you should continue to roleplay and follow the rules as best as you can.
If you must refer to submitting a support ticket in-game, please use a phrase such as "hoping for some divine intervention". When in character please avoid using words such as "Admins", "Gods", "Powers that be", or "Staff" when referring to the Staff team. This has a negative impact on immersion as well as other things.
I can do X thing in game, so why is it against the rules?
Because a major focus of this server is realism. This means behaving, moving, and acting as realistically as possible within the constraints of the game engine. Just because you can do something in the game doesn't mean you should. There are many things possible in DayZ that are impossible in reality. Normally people in real life are not fidgeting or jumping around while having a conversation with someone.
My food and water are always low. Why?
You're probably sprinting everywhere and freezing your toes off.
Why is it always raining?
Deer Isle is an island off the coast of Maine. It's cold, and it's rainy. The harsh conditions, coupled with fluctuating weather systems due to the state of the world, can make for a more immersive experience.
I'd like to be an important character within the lore of the server, or be given lore to disseminate to other characters. How can I start?
Once you have prepared a character concept, fleshed out some details, and have played on the server for a bit, open a support ticket with us and we will start working with you to see whether or not the character will fit into what we have already put in place and the ideas of what we think could happen in the future.
How do you reconcile so many people "showing up" on Deer Isle if the state of the world is so awful?
